EQUIS Magazine is a riso-printed magazine expanding the perimeter of culture, introducing and overlaying the work of multidisciplinary, emerging and established voices. EQUIS responds to the malleable nature of “X”, standing as a mathematical variable, the alteration of gender and pronunciation, taking infinite shapes while traversing multiple fields. Along its issues, EQUIS has featured work regarding the climate crisis, drug legalisation, social justice, territorial exploitation and gender rights, functioning as a platform for a diverse array of voices.

EQUIS has released three print versions; Futurxs Latinxs, Inter, and Erotismo, each dealing with their respective themes. Futurxs Latinxs aimed to envision new futures for Latin America: Its culture, people, geopolitical presence, and mythology. Inter compiles perspectives that assimilate and question the possible definitions of the word ‘inter,’ the state of being in-between. Erotismo focused on the philosophical contemplations concerning the aesthetics of sensuality and questioning the understanding of eroticism as merely the arousal of desire.

This passion project was born out of a collaboration between myself and Calaca Press, an editorial house based in Mexico City and London. When I first arrived in London, I was struck by the lack of Latino voices. Museums, galleries and academia had scant information about Latino critical theory and art, and EQUIS emerged out of a desire to change that. Made with the support of the Latinx Collective in London, I, along with Calaca Press, reached out, interviewed, curated, designed and published EQUIS. We spoke with celebrities, both minor and major, writers, academics and artists from around the globe. The result was a curated selection of works, showcasing over 25 peoples' work.

We would painstakingly design and print each edition, and then sell them through third-party sellers as well as in book fairs. Our magazines were sold in book and collectors fairs throughout the world, such as in Tokyo Art Book Fair, London Offprint, Valencia Recreo Book Fair, and more. Coordinating such an undertaking was laborious, however, it led to the creation of new communities within the London latino diaspora, and cultural events such as book launches, concerts and roundtables. Overall, this is a project which I am deeply proud of and hold dear to my heart - promoting inclusivity, critical inquiry and community is essential in our evermore divided and xenophobic world.
